Cairo, January 30 – Researchers from the Archaeo-Physics department of the Turin Polytechnic have been authorized by the Egyptian government almost a year after they made the request to conduct geo-radar studies inside Tutankhamen’s tomb in Luxor’s Valley of the Kings. The Polytechnic noted that, according to a theory by the British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, the burial place of the pharaoh – known especially for the funerary treasure buried with him including a mask that has gained iconic status – could be part of a larger tomb possibly belonging to Nefertiti, an Egyptian queen whose semblance is preserved in a bust exhibited in Berlin. Measurements will be taken from January 31 to February 6 to “determine whether there are empty spaces and/or halls hidden behind the walls of Tutankhamen’s funerary chamber”, which the specialist refer to using the code KV62. The coordinator of the research group, Franco Porcelli, said that advanced radar systems would be used to find out with 99% accuracy whether “hidden structures of archaeological importance are next to Tutankhamen’s tomb”. The measurements will be then be looked at alongside the presence of suspected cavities in the rock face a few meters from KV6, a cavity that “were found by the research group in May of last year using a different, non-invasive technique outside Tutankhamen’s tomb, based on the three-dimensional mapping of electrical resistance levels of the underground”. However, the geo-radar measurements that will be taken in February will show whether the suspected cavities are connected with KV62, the statement noted. The team of experts belongs to two departments of the Piedmont region state polytechnic: the Applied Sciences and Technology Department and the Environmental, Territorial and Infrastructure Engineering Department, in “collaboration with personnel from the University of Turin’s Earth Sciences Department”. The collaboration also includes two Italian private companies: Turin-based 3DGeoimaging and Livorno-headquartered Geostudi Astier, as well as the UK’s Terravision and – as Egyptology consultant – the Italian Archaeological Center of Cairo. Experts from the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities will also be helping out under former minister Mamdouh Eldamaty.

(by Giorgiana Cristalli) Rome, January 30 – Showman Fiorello says he wants to “warm up the public” at the famed Sanremo song festival opening on Tuesday night. Calling the festival’s presenter, singer-songwriter Claudio Baglioni, on air during the first episode of Fiorello’s new show on Radio Deejay, the showman last night told his longtime friend Baglioni that he would accept his invitation and wanted “to warm up the public on opening night”. “Claudio, 10 days ago you sent me a great message to invite me to the festival and I told you that I’m an anxious type, that I couldn’t do it”, Fiorello jokingly said during the program. But then, he went on, “I thought it over and told myself why not?”, the Sicilian-born entertainer said on his show, Il Rosario della Sera, or The Evening Rosary, a play on Fiorello’s first name Rosario. Baglioni reacted by saying “what great news!”. The two artists, who were both born on May 16 – Baglioni in 1951 and Fiorello nine years later – have often appeared together, both on Fiorello’s program Viva Radio2 and in live performances including at the O’Scia’ music festival in Lampedusa. Fiorello has attended the Sanremo song fest both as a singer- in 1995 with ‘Finalmente Tu’ – and as a guest in 2001 with conductor Raffaella Carrà. Italian pop stars Laura Pausini, Gianna Nannini and Gianni Morandi, and rock group Negramaro will be among the special guests at the 2018 Sanremo song festival-contest. The stars are scheduled to perform two songs at the popular festival screened by RAI, including a duet with this year’s artistic director, singer-songwriter Baglioni. Sting and James Taylor are also set to appear. Sting’s performance will also include a song with Shaggy to present their upcoming joint album, organisers said. The festival runs February 6-10 in the northwestern Italian coastal city. Organizers recently announced that Swiss-Italian presenter Michelle Hunziker and actor Pierfrancesco Favino have joined Baglioni’s Sanremo 2018 team. Baglioni is the main presenter of the 68th edition of Italy’s much-loved song festival-contest, which will be aired by State broadcaster RAI.

Trento, January 30 – Researchers at the Centre for Integrative Biology (CIBIO) of the University of Trento have discovered a molecule that can correct DNA alterations causing genetic diseases and cancer, according to a study published by Nature Biotechnology out on Tuesday. “We have devised an experimental method through which we obtain a molecule – evoCas9 – which is truly accurate in changing DNA”, said Anna Cereseto, a professor at CIBIO and the author of the article describing the study on Nature Biotechnology. It is an “enzyme that is absolutely trustworthy in carrying out change only at an established point”, she said. The “perfect corrector” evoCas9, as described by Cereseto, could be used in non-medical sectors in which genome editing is now essential, including edible plants and cattle.

Palermo, January 30 – Carabinieri police in Palermo on Tuesday arrested six suspected members of the local Bagheria clan in an operation coordinated by DDA anti-mafia police. The suspects are accused of mafia association and aggravated extortion against local retailers and entrepreneurs. They include Paolo Liga, nephew of Mafia boss Giuseppe Scaduto, a leader of the Bagheria clan who was arrested on October 30 last year and who was in contact with fugitive boss of bosses Matteo Messina Denaro, investigators say. Liga was allegedly in charge of his clan’s relations with other Mafia clans in Palermo and Trapani. According to a number of ‘pentiti’, Mafia insiders who turned State witnesses and aided the investigation, the Bagheria clan is able to reorganize after every police operation by immediately replacing its arrested members, according to investigative sources. Palermo Carabinieri Commander Antonio Di Stasio said the arrests on Tuesday “targeted the process to replace the chiefs and historic affiliates with new generations of criminals, the sons of leaders of the most influential families of Cosa Nostra”.

Modena, January 26 – A woman found on train tracks in Modena last weekend was murdered, sources said Friday. A 50-year-old Sardinian man has been arrested for killing the 24-year-old Hungarian prostitute Arietta Mata. He was employed as a warehouse worker and had been living in Modena for at least three years, the sources said. He was known to frequent gambling houses and bet money on slot machines and investigators say this may have played a part in his decision to kill and rob the young woman. The man was caught due to videocamera footage and cellphone tracking. After killing her in the night between Saturday and Sunday, he put her body on train tracks to make it seem like an accident. However, the fact that her bag and cellphone were missing immediately raised suspicion.

Rome, January 23 – Police and Carabinieri officers in the Rome seaside district of Ostia on Thursday arrested 32 people, including the alleged chief of the Spada mafia clan. The suspects included his brother Roberto Spada, who was previously arrested late last year for the November 7 attack in Ostia on RAI TV journalist Daniele Piervincenzi in which he headbutted the reporter and broke his nose. The suspects face charges of mafia criminal association. Police said Roberto and his brother Carmine, the clan boss, ordered the murders of rival bosses Giovanni Galleoni and Francesco Antonini, which were carried out in 2011. These murders “marked the definitive rise of the Spada clan”, police said. The preliminary-investigations judge who signed the arrest warrants, Simonetta D’Alessandro, said a decade-long probe “highlighted the deep penetration of organized crime in the economic activities of the coast”. The mafia association attributed to the Spadas “has caused a significant degradation of the territory, enabling the proliferation of very serious crimes”, she wrote in the arrest orders. The Spadas have been investigated on charges including drug trafficking, loan-sharking, gambling, social housing scams, and for clashing with a rival clan over control of the Ostia area. In one wiretap, a victim of extortion described how Carmine aka Romoletto Spada came to his restaurant with a flame-thrower saying “this isn’t threatening you, it’s going to kill you”. Another victim said “these people aren’t going to stop at anything, and if Romolo (Carmine) doesn’t get the money he’ll kill us all”.
